Last name, Ms

Last name, Ms
In modern times ‘Ms’ is often written before a woman’s last name. It avoids distinguishing her more precisely as either ‘Mrs’ or ‘Miss’, a distinction that many women feel is irrelevant. ‘Ms’ usually has the spoken form Miz, a pronunciation long heard in the southern states of the USA. Thus we find in Gone With The Wind, by Margaret Mitchell, Belle Watling saying: ‘Please come in here and set with me a minute, Miz Wilkes.’ This is to Melanie, wife of Ashley Wilkes. War Brides, by Lois Battle, has: ‘Then an old Negro man in livery stepped up to her and doffed his cap. “Miz Cunningham?” he enquired politely. ‘Yes, I’m Mrs Cunningham.”’ An article in Psychology of Women Quarterly, 11, by Kenneth L. Dion reported in 1987 that women who insist on the use of ‘Ms’ appear to be more achievement-oriented, socially assertive, and dynamic, but lack interpersonal warmth.
